Homeowners Along Upper Bayou Terrebonne Eligible for Sewage System Repair Reimbursement Program

The Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary Program (BTNEP), in partnership with the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) and the South Central Planning and Development Commission (SCPDC), has launched a new initiative aimed at helping residents repair failing home sewage systems along Upper Bayou Terrebonne. The program is funded through a grant secured with the support of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

According to BTNEP and LUMCON, the grant will be used to improve household sewage systems that pose environmental and public health risks. SCPDC will oversee the implementation of the program, including site visits, inspections, and reimbursement distribution for eligible homeowners.

SCPDC representatives will conduct on-site evaluations to identify broken or failing sewage systems. Homeowners whose systems qualify will then be referred for financial assistance. Participation is voluntary, and residents must register to receive program benefits.

Once a system is approved, a licensed contractor will provide an estimate, perform repairs, and bring the system back into compliance. A final inspection by SCPDC will confirm completion before reimbursement is issued.

The program offers two reimbursement levels based on income eligibility:

  • Non–low income homeowners:

    • 100% of the first $700 in costs
    • 50% of remaining costs
    • Maximum reimbursement of $2,000
  • Low-income applicants:

    • Up to $4,000 reimbursed at 100%

Officials say the financial assistance could save homeowners between $2,000 and $4,000 in repair expenses while also reducing pollution and improving water quality throughout the bayou region. Upgrading damaged systems also reduces health risks associated with untreated sewage and helps protect local drinking water sources.

The program is a one-time opportunity and is completely voluntary. Residents seeking more information can review the attached flyer or contact (985) 851-2900 for guidance on eligibility and enrollment.
