Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator is responsible for performing all operating functions, analytical testing, general maintenance functions, housekeeping, and record keeping of the facilities.

In this role, the incumbent will be expected perform tasks such as grit removal, preparation, primary sedimentation, activated biofiltration, extended aeration, chemical coagulation, final sedimentation, chlorination, de-chlorination, and anaerobic sludge digestion.

The WWTP Operator must comply with all safety regulations and procedures, including the proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout procedures, confined space protocols, and chemical handling requirements.

  • Valid Louisiana driver’s license
  • LA DHH-OHP Wastewater Treatment IV certification or the ability to obtain

  • Operate and maintain various equipment in the sewerage treatment plant, including valves, gates, aerators, chemical feed systems, pumps, motors, and sludge handling equipment.
  • Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tanks, lines, and laboratory glassware to ensure proper operation of treatment processes.
  • Collect samples and conduct quality control laboratory tests for parameters such as BOD5, TSS, pH, DO, residual chlorine, settleability, and fecal coliform.
  • Perform operational tests including sludge volume index, food/mass ratio, and mixed liquor suspended solids, and take corrective actions based on chemical analysis to maintain discharge permit compliance.
  • Monitor and adjust control panels, gauges, alarms, and meters to ensure optimal plant operations.
  • Respond to plant alarms, emergency conditions, and operational upsets, including after-hours or on-call response when assigned.
  • Adjust flows and processes during wet-weather or high-flow events to maintain treatment efficiency and compliance.
  • Maintain detailed operating logs and operate data acquisition systems and telemetry consoles.
  • Oversee sludge and supernatant quality and manage sludge dewatering equipment operations.
  • Assist with startup, shutdown, and calibration of treatment systems and equipment as required.
  • Assist with regulatory inspections and audits by providing documentation, logs, and operational data as requested.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on plant equipment to ensure smooth, efficient operation.
  • Report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and environmental incidents to supervision in a timely manner.
  • Participate in quarterly One-on-One meetings with Supervisor.
  • Complete all required annual trainings—including ethics, harassment prevention, diversity, and cybersecurity—in accordance with organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure all duties and responsibilities are performed with integrity, professionalism, and in good faith, consistently upholding and protecting the interests, reputation, and assets of the Parish government.
  • Perform any additional task as required by Supervisor.

  • Leadership Skills: Ability to motivate team members, ensure safety and compliance while making informed decisions during emergencies.
  • Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks, balance routine maintenance with urgent issues.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to collect and analyze water samples, perform quality control tests, and interpret chemical analysis to ensure compliance with discharge regulations. Monitoring gauges, alarms, and meters accurately to ensure all systems are functioning within desired parameters.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills to follow instructions, complete logs, and collaborate with coworkers.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, maintain accurate records, and efficiently schedule and track preventative maintenance.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of sewerage treatment processes and the ability to operate and maintain various treatment plant equipment, such as pumps, motors, and chemical feed systems.
  • Qualifications:
    • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
    • Experience in wastewater plant operation preferred.
