Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government’s Senior Equipment Operator – Marshbuggy/Fecon Mulcher is responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of specialized heavy equipment to support parish-wide drainage system maintenance.
In this role, the incumbent will be expected to operate marsh buggies, excavators and Fecon attachments to clear canals, maintain levees, and ensure effective stormwater flow throughout the parish.
The Senior Equipment Operator also performs routine maintenance on equipment, completes documentation, assists with field inspections, and supports the team with field readiness and safety compliance.

- Valid Louisiana driver’s license
- Meet with the Supervisor each morning to receive daily work assignments and project briefings.
- Operate marsh buggy excavators to perform ditch excavation, sloping, and construction of levees, drive piling, and clear bayous to maintain appropriate depth and flow.
- Operate Fecon forestry mulcher attachment to safely and efficiently clear dense brush, undergrowth, and small trees from drainage rights-of-way, levees, and canal banks.
- Assess vegetation type and density to determine the appropriate method and speed of clearing using Fecon equipment.
- Conduct regular maintenance of Fecon attachment, including greasing fittings, checking hydraulic lines, and replacing worn teeth or cutting components as needed.
- Identify and safely manage potential hazards such as hidden debris, wildlife, or utility obstructions while clearing vegetation.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks and ensure proper functioning of assigned equipment, including monitoring oil levels, air filters, and lubricants.
- Supervise and train assigned assistants in equipment operation and job site safety.
- Adhere strictly to all safety regulations and operational procedures.
- Safely load and unload marsh buggy and excavator equipment onto transport trailers (low-boy).
- Perform minor mechanical repairs and torch work on-site to address equipment issues.
- Assist maintenance personnel with major equipment repairs when required.
- Operate small watercraft (Jon boat) to access remote job sites and transport fuel or equipment.
- Report breakdowns, unsafe conditions, and emergencies to the Operation Supervisor in a timely manner.
- Assess job sites to determine terrain safety and equipment suitability.
- Perform any additional task as required by the Supervisor.
- Leadership Skills: Ability to guide and oversee team members on-site, promoting safety, efficiency, and accountability in all aspects of field operations.
- Time Management: Effectively prioritizes tasks and manages work schedules to ensure timely completion of daily assignments and long-term drainage projects.
- Analytical Skills: Utilizes strong analytical abilities to assess job site conditions, evaluate equipment performance, and make informed decisions while operating heavy machinery to ensure optimal results and safety.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills to provide clear instructions to team members, collaborate with supervisors, and report job tasks and issues accurately.
- Organizational Skills: Maintains well-documented work orders, tracks project progress, and ensures tools, equipment, and materials are properly maintained and ready for use.
- Technical Skills: Proficiently operates and maintains heavy machinery and related tools, while applying knowledge of drainage systems, safety protocols, and basic mechanical functions.
- Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years of experience operating excavators, preferably in drainage or similar environments.
