Wetlands Discovery Center Celebrates World Wetlands Day Fri., Jan. 31

The South Louisiana Wetlands Discovery Center will host Terrebonne Parish’s 11th Annual World Wetlands Day celebration from 8:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Friday, January 31, 2020, at the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum, 7910 W Park Ave., Houma.

School visits will begin at 8:45 a.m., and the event will be open to the public from 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.

To celebrate World Wetlands Day, the Wetlands Discovery Center will host an educational event complete with hands-on activities and a tour of the Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum in Downtown Houma.

Organized by the Convention of Wetlands, World Wetlands Day celebrates the importance of our wetland ecosystems with this year’s theme Wetlands and Biodiversity. Our global wetlands provide habitat for thousands of species of plants and animals with over 100,000 freshwater species identified to date. Many of these species are now facing extinction due to pollution, overexploitation of resources, and invasive species. These problems can ultimately lead to habitat loss and have also contributed to the overall loss of 35% of the world’s wetlands since the 1970s.

Terrebonne Parish’s 2020 World Wetlands Day is made possible by funds raised by the Rougarou Fest.
