Terrebonne Parish President Michel Claudet in conjunction with the Terrebonne Parish Council, and the Terrebonne Levee and Conservation District would like the residents of the Gibson and Bayou Black communities to remain alert for potential flooding this spring.

At this time, the Atchafalaya River has exceeded its flood stage height of 4 feet near Morgan City, LA. It is predicted that this water level can potentially continue to rise with increased local rainfall and melting of higher than normal snow accumulation in the northern portions of the United States. While flooding conditions are not expected until the Atchafalaya River reaches its crest sometime this spring, parish officials are requesting that residents be proactive in protecting their property.

In order to assist residents in these areas, Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government will be establishing sand and sandbag distribution points on Wednesday February 24, 2010. The sand and
sandbag locations are as follows:

Gibson Fire Station, 110 Merry Moss Street, Gibson, LA 70356

East Gibson Fire Station, 5218 N Bayou Black Drive Gibson, LA 70356

Donner-Chacahoula Fire Station, 1805 Highway 20, Schriever, LA 70395

Bayou Black Fire Station, 2820 Savanne Road Houma, LA 70360

Schriever Volunteer Fire Department, 1529 West Park Ave, Schriever, LA 70395

These locations will be maintained until the end of March.

“While backwater flooding from the Atchafalaya River is not imminent, I urge the residents of the Gibson and Bayou Black communities to prepare for the river’s crest, sometime in March” stated Parish President Claudet. “Citizens can rest assured that we monitoring the level of the Atchafalaya River on a daily basis and we stand ready to proactively meet this challenge” added President Claudet.
