Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)

The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP), sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agency provides grants to States and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration. The purpose of the HMGP is to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster.

While Terrebonne Parish has applied for HMGP funds to finance various parish-wide projects, the Office of Coastal Restoration & Preservation has spearheaded the application process for the "Bayou Terrebonne Bank Stabilization" project, which proposes to construct an earthen barrier with rock armoring along the eastern bank of Bayou Terrebonne south of Montegut. The project is projected to cost approximately $3.5 million, which will be fully funded by the HMGP.
