SUMMARY:

The work of this class is skilled electrical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of sub transmission, primary distribution and secondary distribution lines, and related components of the municipal electrical distribution system. The work requires the application of electrical skills and knowledge to a variety of work on overhead and underground circuits including work on energized primary and secondary distribution circuits. Incumbents must be alert to the hazards in handling power lines under varying weather conditions, and must take prescribed precautions to protect life and property. The work requires the use of specialized climbing and safety gear to install, energize, maintain and repair power lines and a variety of other related electrical equipment. The work is generally performed without direct supervision and requires the supervision and direction of subordinate crewmembers. Typically, the employee is assigned to diagnose power problems and may work with considerable independence. Development is guided toward improving technical knowledge and trouble-shooting abilities. Occasionally, he may manage switching operations under the guidance of a supervisor. A superior inspects the work in progress and evaluates performance through the efficiency of power distribution operations. This position requires response to 24-hour call as scheduled and as required in emergencies.

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

01) Climbs poles or uses bucket truck to work on energized primary and secondary voltage power lines and equipment.
02) Installs, maintains, repairs or replenishes transmission and distribution lines, transformers and all associated appurtenances (switchgear, lightning arrestors, metering devices, ground rods, cross arms and insulators).
03) Installs underground wiring and transformers; transfers conduction, transformers or other equipment.
04) Installs consumer service lines from poles or underground facilities to buildings and houses.
05) Makes voltage checks on lines and transformers.
06) Installs and repairs streetlights.
07) Works in substations installing switches, changing wires, etc.
08) Assists in training employees of a lower level.
09) Performs related work as required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

01) Complete knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the lineman and trade as they apply to work on energized primary and secondary distribution circuits.
02) Ability to locate, diagnose and repair defects in electrical systems.
03) Ability to interpret electrical diagrams and plans.
04) Acquire/maintain CDL Class A driver’s license.
05) All requisites prescribed for Lineman II and lower classifications.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

01) High School diploma or equivalent education certification supplemented by a course in basic electricity and 2 years minimum experience as a Linemen II are desirable.
02) Any equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience may substitute.
