Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes have been invited to compete with other communities nationwide for a portion of $1 billion invested by Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC) for risk reduction.

Louisiana has been successful in Phase 1 of the competition representing Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes. The parishes are hosting a joint public meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, at the Houma Municipal Auditorium, 880 Verret St., to discuss both Lafourche and Terrebonne’s long-term futures as well as receive comments and input from the community with a special emphasis being placed on opportunities to build resilience.

This public meeting will be held in support of the Louisiana’s Phase 2 application to the NDRC. The $1 billion pool of federal funds is set aside for programs and projects designed to mitigate shared vulnerabilities.

The Louisiana Office of Community Development is spearheading this effort and their leadership will describe the competition details and lead a discussion proposing several projects submitted by parish stakeholders. Partners will then facilitate a discussion with attendees to gather input on these projects or other innovative options that the community members feel would best reduce risk and or speed recovery after storms.

Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes are two of the four parishes the state has designated as target areas for this funding opportunity and is currently in Phase 2 of the competition. The review committee will fund successful applicant projects valued from $1,000,000 to $500,000,000.
