Ground Breaking for long-awaited levee project

The Terrebonne Parish Consolidated Government, the Corps of Engineers, and the Terrebonne Levee & Conservation District are scheduled to hold a groundbreaking Friday, February 6, 2009, off of Georgi Girl Drive in Houma (directions are listed below). It takes cooperation and coordination between state, local and federal entities to complete this project and it has been a great effort by all parties to get to this point. This ceremony kicks off the start of construction on the $30 million project to repair, replace, modify and improve the Suzie Canal and Orange Street nonfederal levees. Directions from the New Orleans airport:

  • From the airport, turn right onto Airline Hwy. heading north toward Baton Rouge and travel for approximately 4 miles.
  • Stay in the left lane, look for sign with Luling/Destrehan Bridge (I-310) and turn right
  • Once over bridge, there will be a right exit to Hwy 90 W- Houma.
  • You will cross two overpasses through Des Allemends and Raceland. Approximately 4 miles from Raceland exit, take the Houma exit 210
  • Turn left under overpass onto Hwy 182, which will eventually become New Orleans Blvd.
  • Continue on New Orleans Blvd. (four lanes) until you reach Park and cross over small bridge to Main (2nd. light). Turn left onto the Twin Span
  • At the end of bridge there will be a traffic light; turn right onto Grand Caillou Rd.
  • Stay on Grand Caillou Rd. and travel approximately 12 miles.
  • Georgi Girl Dr. is on your left.
  • Travel down Georgi Girl until you come to the levee at Bayou Butler and turn left on the gravel road. The ceremony will be just ahead on the Suzie Canal levee. Parking will be limited to the side of the gravel road along Bayou Butler.
Directions from Lafayette:
  • Take Hwy 90 (four lanes) going through Morgan City – Amelia – Gibson – Chachoula
  • At the next exit (Houma/Thibodaux), veer to the right to get on Hwy. 311.
  • Stay on Hwy. 311 for approximately 10 miles.
  • At the seventh traffic light (Barrow St/Hwy 182), turn left.
  • At the next traffic light, take a right onto Honduras St. and veer into the left lane to go through the Houma Navigation Tunnel.
  • After exiting the tunnel, get in the right lane and take a right at the traffic light onto Grand Caillou Road.
  • Stay on Grand Caillou Road for approximately 12 miles.
  • Turn left onto Georgi Girl Drive.
  • Travel down Georgi Girl until you come to the levee at Bayou Butler and turn left on the gravel road. The ceremony will be just ahead on the Suzie Canal levee. Parking will be limited to the side of the gravel road along Bayou Butler.
