NWS Heavy Rain Update - January 22, 2024, 8 AM

Monday January 22, 2024 08:14 am - 228 Views - Posted By Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness

Changes from previous update:

  • No major changes from yesterday except the highest amounts were lowered a little but still widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain expected and the initial band of rain could be more late Tuesday instead of tonight.

Overview:

WHAT: MARGINAL RISK and SLIGHT RISK of Heavy Rain that could lead to isolated flash flooding

WHEN:  Tuesday through Wednesday Night. Additional rounds of storms are possible through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

WHERE:  Mainly northwest of a line from Baton Rouge to McComb Tuesday and Tuesday night and the entire area Wednesday and Wednesday night. Rain, locally heavy at times, is possible across the rest of the area after that and into the weekend.

CONFIDENCE:

  • We are confident multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will move across the area, possibly beginning as early as Tuesday and then on and off into the weekend.
  • We are less confident on the amounts as a few of the rounds of storms could mostly remain west and northwest of the area keeping the heaviest rain out of the region at times.

Impacts:

  • Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is currently forecast. Locally higher amounts will be possible
  • Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and some potential for localized flash flooding
  • If the higher totals are realized then we can expect to see rises on area rivers, with minor flooding will be possible
