NWS Update on Heavy Rain Threat for the Upcoming Week

Sunday January 21, 2024 08:54 am - 209 Views - Posted By Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness

Changes from previous update:

  • The cold impacts will end in a few hours.

Overview:

WHAT: MARGINAL RISK and SLIGHT RISK of Heavy Rain that could lead to isolated flash flooding

WHEN:  Tuesday through Wednesday Night. Additional rounds of storms are possible through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

WHERE:  Mainly northwest of a line from New Roads to Crosby Tuesday and Tuesday night and the entire area Wednesday and Wednesday night. Rain, locally heavy at times, is possible across the rest of the area after that and into the weekend.

CONFIDENCE:

  • We are confident multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms will move across the area possibly beginning as early as Tuesday morning and into the weekend.
  • We are less confident on the amounts as a few of the rounds of storms could mostly remain west and northwest of the area keeping the heaviest rain out of the area at times.

Impacts:

  • Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is currently forecast. Locally higher amounts will be possible
  • Expect ponding of water in low lying areas and some potential for localized flash flooding
  • If the higher totals are realized then we can expect to see rises on area rivers, with minor flooding will be possible.
