Terrebonne Parish Council to Vote on FEMA Flood Maps

FEMA has issued new flood maps for Terrebonne Parish that will go into effect September 7, 2023. The Parish Council will vote on whether or not to adopt the maps on August 23, 2023. These changes are required in order for the Parish to remain compliant with the National Flood Insurance Program’s floodplain management requirements. The new flood maps being voted on will replace the maps from 1985 that are currently being used.

To find out if you have been affected by these changes and will now be in a special flood hazard area, check the maps at tpcg.org/floodplain.

The new maps will show zone and minimum flood elevation requirements. In addition, on August 1, 2023, the State of Louisiana’s building code began requiring 1 additional foot (2 for critical facilities) of elevation. For additional information about these requirements, contact the Parish Permit Office at (985) 873-6567.

If you are affected by these changes, it is important to check with your insurance agent and mortgage lender to ensure that you remain compliant with the conditions of your loan.

If you feel that there is an error with the changes made to your property’s special flood hazard risk, you can request a Letter of Map Amendment & Letter of Map Revision.

Discussions about the new maps have been ongoing since 2008, but due to the length of time needed to create the maps and interpret new data, FEMA set a deadline of July 2019 for any new information. A considerable amount of work has been done since that date, and TPCG is currently working on creating a plan to include improvements made from the cutoff date of July 2019 to present.

For any further information or questions you may have, please visit tpcg.org/floodplain or call (985) 873-6567.
