Reminder from Planning & Zoning Before Signing Contracts or Paying Deposits

Before signing any contracts or putting down any deposits, check the following:

  1. Is the contractor licensed by the LA State Board of Licensed Contractors? Even an out of state company can obtain a LA license.  Make sure the contractor is licensed for the work to be done.
  2. Ask for a copy of their insurance and call the insurance company to confirm. Call your home insurance carrier and let them know which contractor you are considering using.
  3. Get it in writing. Ask for written estimates and don’t pay without a contract identifying the entire scope of work.
  4. The type of required license for residential work depends on the TOTAL job cost;
    1. Under $7,500 – no license required
    2. $7,500 to $75,000 – home improvement license required.
    3. Over $75,000 – general contractor license.
  5. Commercial work over $10,000 requires a general contractor license.
  6. Check with your local Better Business Bureau to learn if your considered contractor is in good standing. You should also ask for references.
  7. Permits for repairs including, such as roof repairs, electrical rework are required prior to work beginning. However permit fees for repairs due to Hurricane Ida will be waived.

* Permits can be applied for online at www.mypermitnow.org.  We are also developing a physical location to facilitate in-person permit applications.  Stay tuned for more information on this. *

HELPFUL HINTS:

  • Use common sense and look for warning signs, such as the lack of professional business cards with license and insurance information
  • Vehicles with little or no business signage
  • There are scammers and fly-by-nighters. Ask questions. Don’t let yourself be forced into a hasty decision by smooth talk.
  • Remember, YOU are in charge.
