About The Event
Terrebonne Parish Planning Department, together with the Houma Downtown Development Corporation, want you to fall back in love with Downtown Houma! Together, we will be investigating techniques to activate the historic Main Street corridor through downtown demonstration day event.
The Downtown Demonstration Days will include temporary elements such as:- The realignment of Main Street, turning the two traffic lanes into a single traffic lane, replacing parallel parking with angled parking, and adding a bike lane
- Pedestrian crosswalks at all intersections and enhanced entry corridors at pedestrian bridges
- Pocket parks
- Pop-up storefronts utilizing existing, vacant storefronts along the corridor
- Public art installations
- Permanent public amenities such as planters, shade sails, furniture, and lighting
- Public outreach "studio", which will be open to the public after the event for continuing feedback
The public’s participation and feedback throughout the event will be used to create a Master Plan for the corridor that will be implemented in future phases.

After the event winds down in the evening, discover local libations at the array of downtown bars- old and new!
Pocket Parks and Plazas
We will have three new areas for people to lounge and play! Take the kids to our family friendly pocket park on the corner of Main and Grinage St. Live Healthy Houma has a movement maze for the kids to try out, as well as fun games and seating. Grab a bite to eat at our food truck court and enjoy your fare at the Belanger St. plaza in front of Milano’s. There will be overhead twinkle lights, lush planters and bistro seating for everyone’s use. Enjoy the sounds of local musicians while sitting under the boughs of live oaks at our linear pocket park in front of the old Post Office. Make new friends or enjoy conversations with old ones. There will be plenty of opportunities to lounge about and talk!
Reverse Angle Parking
Reverse angle parking will be demonstrated at the last block of the event- starting in front of People’s Drugs. Reverse angle parking is easier than parallel parking and safer then head-in angle parking. Take a look at our instructive diagram if you want to try it out at the event. Reverse angle parking provides increased visibility when leaving a parking space and encourages occupants to move towards the sidewalk via the vehicle’s door-swing direction.
