Three types of probation exist at City Court of Houma: unsupervised, supervised, and State probation. The seriousness of a juvenile’s charge(s) and/or the number of charges determines what type of probation a juvenile receives.
The vast majority of juvenile offenders are placed on unsupervised probation and monitored monthly through status hearings. In various circumstances, status hearings are conducted in the school setting to determine how well a student is doing in three areas: attendance, behavior and academic performance. Parents are also required to be present for these status hearings.
More serious or chronic juvenile offenders are placed on supervised probation with a Juvenile Probation Officer at City Court. The probation officer checks on a juvenile as many as five times per week both at school and at home. The probation officer also works with the juvenile and the family to help resolve any issues that may be causing problems and also recommends any services he feels may be appropriate.
The most serious or chronic juvenile offenders are placed on probation with the State of Louisiana and are monitored by probation officers from the Office of Youth Development. These juveniles are facing a minimum of one year in State’s custody and a maximum of juvenile life (twenty-one years of age).
In all three cases, as long as a juvenile is following the conditions of his probation, than he will be monitored. However, if a juvenile violates any conditions, consequences such as community service work are offered in lieu of revoking probation. If a juvenile continues to violate probation conditions, his probation may be revoked and he can serve his sentence either in the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Detention Center or a state-run juvenile facility.
Questions regarding juvenile probation may be addressed to the Clerk of Court/Court Administrator at (985) 868-4232, ext. 201
